Lorraine Jean Hook, age 92, of Wapello, died Wednesday afternoon, April 10, 2019, under hospice care with her family surrounding her at the Bickford Cottage in Muscatine.  The daughter of Daniel and Josephine LaStrange Gaunya, she was born on December 21, 1926 in New Haven, Connecticut.  She met Robert ‘Bob’ Hook at a dance at Yale University while he was serving in the Army Air Corps.  They were married on February 7, 1948 in New Haven.  They came by train to Iowa and farmed together for 67 years.  He preceded her in death on January 8, 2017.

Lorraine had attended Catholic schools through junior high and graduated from New Haven High School.  She had worked at some dress shops and through her lifetime was an active seamstress.  She was a member of the Lucky 13 Club, the Wapello Study Club, a Charter Member and very active in the Wapello Chapter G of T.T.T.  She was involved in her church having taught Sunday School and serving on the Church Council at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for years in Wapello and later attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Columbus Junction.  Her faith and her church were a very important part of her life.

Her family includes a son, David & Candy Hook of Wapello; a daughter, Mary Lynne Gieselman & John Kincaid of Muscatine; five grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; sixteen nieces and nephews and their families; and a brother Neil Gaunya of Wallingford, Connecticut.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; a brother, Herbert; and two sisters, Norma and Doris.

The Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 AM on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Columbus Junction.  Rev. Troy Richmond will officiate.  Burial will follow at the Mallory Cemetery, rural Wapello.  The family will meet friends on Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.

Memorial gifts will benefit the Wapello Fire and Rescue and the Keck Memorial Library.

Family of Lorraine: My prayers are with you. Your folks enjoyed spending their life on the farm and visiting with neighbors.
