Royce F. Bonnichsen, age 84, of rural Columbus Junction, died at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City on Tuesday, December 19, 2017.  He was born on April 11, 1933 in rural Columbus Junction, the son of Thomas Frederick and Elva Foster Bonnichsen.  He married Patricia McGill on March 17, 1956.  They adopted four children, Raymond, David, William, and Terri.  She preceded him in death on January 7, 1971.   On January 12, 1972 he married Charlotte Mae Huff Young at the Spring Run Church in rural Columbus Junction.  Their family then included three daughters, Rhonda, Dana, and Penny.  They farmed in the Grandview area and had their son, Tom.

He graduated from Grandview High School in 1950.  Royce served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict as a clerk typist at the Pentagon and then serving in Germany.

Royce was a member of the Grandview-Letts Lions Club and received the Warren Coleman Honorary Award for dedicated service in Lionism.  He also belonged to a bowling league and served on the Louisa County Fair Board.  He enjoyed being included in an Honor Flight to Washington D.C.  Royce and Charlotte were awarded the 4-H Hall of Fame award at the Iowa State Fair in 2010.  He enjoyed tractor rides, woodworking, and volunteering at the Louisa County Fair.

His family includes children, Raymond Bonnichsen of Mason City, David Bonnichsen of Davenport, Bill Bonnichsen of Muscatine, Teresa Hall of Washington, Rhonda & Jim Tegner of Flower Mound, Texas, Dana & Greg Townsley of Wapello, Penny Young & Dave Hervert of Killeen, Texas, and Tom & Rebecca Bonnichsen of Letts; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Patricia and Charlotte; five sisters, Carol Schafer, Frances McKean, Faithe Walters, Joanne Garlock, and an infant, Lucille; and a brother, Raymond Bonnichsen.

The family will meet friends on Tuesday, December 26, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.  The funeral ceremony for Royce Bonnichsen will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home officiated by Rev. Mike Townsley.  Burial will follow at the Grandview Cemetery officiated by Pastor Randy Whitsel with a lunch to follow at the Louisa County Fairground Youth Center.

Memorial gifts will benefit the Louisa County Fair and the Grandview-Letts Lions.

This is very sad.....Royce was respected, admired and cannot be replaced.

So sorry to hear about Royce passing. We enjoyed knowing both Royce and Charlotte through Lions Club in Grandview. He was a kind and compassionate man. He always was ready to give a helping hand to anyone needing it. He gave freely and will be missed.
