Larry Duane Boysen, age 74, of rural Wapello, passed away doing his afternoon chores on Wednesday, February 10th, 2016. The son of Albert and Harriet “Lorena” Fletcher Boysen. He was born on November 28th, 1941 in Burlington, IA. He graduated from Wapello High School in 1959. He married Mary Erwin on March 14th, 1964 in Jefferson City, Missouri. They were married 51 years.

Larry attended Colorado State University followed by serving our country in the U.S. Army Reserves. He then came home to help his dad farm and worked on the drilling rigs around the Cairo, Iowa area. Soon after, for 12 years, he was a hog buyer at Rath Packing in Columbus Junction, Iowa, while working as a full time farmer. He raised pigs and cattle, and took pride in improving his cattle herd through artificial insemination. His passion for farming has been passed down to many of his grandchildren. He enjoyed morning coffee, a hand of cards, coon hunting, and attending all of his grandchildren’s activities. He will always be remembered for his orneriness, sense of humor, and never knowing a stranger.

He was very active in the community, always offering a helping hand.  He has been involved in the Louisa County Fair Board for over 40 years and was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame in 2005. He enjoyed being in the Eastern Iowa Coon Hunters Coon Club and his favorite dog was Jed.

Larry was also a member of the Wapello School Board, FSA Board, The Wapello Elevator Board, and many other organizations.

He will be greatly missed by his loving family and many friends.

His family, all who live in Louisa County, include 3 sons: Aaron (Bambi), Duane (Jodi), Adam (Abby) Boysen; 12 Grandchildren: Adair (Jason) Lents, Bay (Logan Lanz-Engaged), Kale, Sydney, Larame, Koby, Kabe, Tate, Ada, Jack, Samuel, and Benjamin Boysen; 1 Great Grandchild: Remsen Lents; and 2 Siblings: Harold (Anne) Boysen, Hazel (Gene) Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, infant brother, brother-in-law (Gene Anderson), and sister-in-law (Anne Boysen).

A memorial fund has been established for the Benefit of the Louisa County Fair.

Friends may call from 2:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday, February 15, 2016, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello where the family will meet friends from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.

The funeral ceremony for Larry Boysen will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Wapello with Pastor Dan Doolin and Rev. Jon Evans officiating.  Burial will follow at the Oakland Cemetery, rural Wapello followed by a celebration time across the road in the Duane Boysen shed.

I was formerly a teacher at Wapello High School. I had Larry's children in the classroom and Larry served on the school board during my time there.
Larry was an outstanding person and parent. Kind to all and very caring. He will be sorely missed by all. Robyn and I extend our deepest sympathies to family. A very wonderful person best describes Larry.

My condolences to Larry's family. My mother (Fern Alfred) is a cousin of Larry's. I called his folks my aunt and uncle while growing up in Iowa. We used to have huge family gatherings at someone's farm, seemed like weekly. Larry was always teasing me, causing me to always be aware of him. We had a lot a fun playing on their farm. My family moved away to California. In last saw Larry in 2003. My memories of him were confirmed. Still the same old guy through the ages. I will always remember those dusty old days on the farm, playing in the barn and getting scared out of my mind. Family ties are always felt and I am glad that I had the chance to know Larry. May the Lord take Larry into his home and watch over his family.

Our sympathy goes out to your family during this time. My very first 4-H steer (which I named Rambo) actually came from Larry, and later went on to win my first trophy as a 4-Her. He left a lasting impression with a lot of people. He'll be missed but not forgotten.
