H. Dean Samuels

Harold Dean Samuels, age 90, of Wapello, died Saturday afternoon, July 27, 2013, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.  The son of Charles and Anna Bartenhagen Samuels, he was born on January 3, 1923 in Morning Sun.  He married Patricia Jean Lihs Marshall on October 14, 1960 in Iowa City.  She preceded him in death on November 5, 2006.

Dean graduated from Morning Sun High School in 1941.  He served in the US Army during WW II having gone to Hiroshima and Nickaraga, Japan.  He worked at the Farmers Elevator in Wapello for 13 years and owned the Wapello Oil Company for 4 years.  He retired from Grain Processing in Muscatine after 17 years.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wapello, the Louisa County Historical Society, and the American Legion Hays Scott Post 112 of Morning Sun.

Dean loved bowling, fishing, playing cards, gardening, and his grandchildren.  He loved helping friends and neighbors.

His family includes two daughters, Teresa & Doug Hank of Wapello and Delores ‘Doddie’ Burgus & Dick Roth of Burlington; four grandchildren, Deann Giese of Mediapolis, Jeremy Spears of Mediapolis, Brad & Chevy Hank of Wapello, and Tyler Hank of Wapello; eight great grandchildren, Bradlee Hank and Kirstyn Hank, both of Wapello, Stasha & Jesse Padgett of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Emma Giese of Kirkwood, Illinois, Sierra Chaney of Mediapolis, Denver French of Dallas City, Illinois, and Aiden Spears and Dayonna Spears both of Mediapolis; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pat; four brothers, Ray, Robert, Carl, and Glen; six sisters, Esther, Viola, Helen, Vera, Margaret, and Miriam; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Hank.

As per his wishes his body will be cremated.  The funeral ceremony for Dean Samuels will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Wapello with Rev. Pam Kranzler officiating.  Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery with military rites by the Wapello VFW Glenn Allen Post 5166 and the Morning Sun American Legion Hays Scott Post 112.  The family will meet friends 1 hour prior to the funeral and for a luncheon following the burial all at the United Methodist Church.  

A Memorial Fund has been established for the United Methodist Church.
