Caroline Marie Creswell Bartenhagen, age 104, of Wapello, died Saturday evening, March 17, 2018, at he Wapello Specialty Care.  The daughter and only child of Ethelbert and Addie Mae (Archibald) Creswell, she was born September 5, 1913 on the Creswell farm in Port Louisa Township.  She married Henry P. Bartenhagen on May 23, 1936 at the First Presbyterian Church in Wapello.  He preceded her in death on October 1, 1987.

Marie graduated from Grandview Consolidated High School in 1931 and from Parsons College in 1933.  She taught country school in Louisa County for one year and two years in Wapello until she was married.  Marie and Henry first moved to the Letts/Burston farm, rural Grandview, where they raised Pure Bred Angus.  In 1955 they purchased and moved to the original Stephen/Dickenson homestead where Marie resided until her death.  Together and in operation with their sons, Marie and Henry continued to raise Pure Bred Angus and increased the enterprise to 1,000 acres.  She was the quintessential farm wife, being a fantastic cook and able to feed large numbers of farm hands.  She was also an avid photographer, and her grandchildren will attest she always had her back to the sun.

Marie was a member of the Muscatine I-club, the Grandview Federated Club, the Lone Tree Aide Society, the Keep Pace Club, Chapter ET of P.E.O., and Delta Alpha guild at the First Presbyterian Church.  Family history was very important to Marie.  She came from a long line of early (1836) families of Louisa County: Stephen, Dickinson, Archibald, Crilley, Jackson, and Erwin.

Marie is survived by a son, Forrest Bartenhagen of Wapello; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Bartenhagen of Wapello; five grandsons, Stephen (Martha) Bartenhagen of Elgin, William Bartenhagen and John (Shelley) Bartenhagen both of Wapello, Charles Bartenhagen of Davenport, and Michael (Jennifer) Bartenhagen of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; a granddaughter, Lisa (Kirk) Bohn of Denver, Colorado; 16 great grandchildren, Clarence, Alex (Ashley), Patrick, Andrew, Abbey, Virginia, Audra, Evan, Harmon, and Will Bartenhagen, Christian Bohn, Matthew, Nathan, Hannah, Tommy, and Henry Bartenhagen; a great great granddaughter, Adeline; and many nieces and nephews.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Addie; parents-in-law, William and Emma Bartenhagen; husband, Henry; son, Clarence; and siblings-in-law, Ella (Cliff)Schmidt, Elfrieda (Keith) Beik, and Walder (Myrtle) Bartenhagen.

The funeral service for Marie Bartenhagen will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 31, 2018, at the First Presbyterian Church in Wapello.  The family will meet with friends prior to the funeral from 10:00 to 11:00 at the church.  Rev. Jon Evans will officiate, and the burial will follow at the Harrison Cemetery, rural Wapello.  The family and friends will gather for a fellowship lunch at the First Presbyterian Church Community Hall following the burial.

Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church or the Wapello Fire and Rescue.
